About

This project was a response to the first Covid19 lockdown. In April 2020 I cancelled a dance theatre project and instead invited the artists to spend 3 months experimenting with creative development online.

We made a list of poetic ‘invitations’ to share with one another. These enabled us to explore sound, text, sensation, our moving bodies and environment in nuanced creative ways during lockdown. We generated satisfying connection, shared poetry and creative synergies from a distance. We undertook a number of night walks - alone but together - by each stepping out into our respective neighbourhoods. Doing this simultaneously, communicating via WhatsApp and intentionally heightening our attention to the evening streets felt potent and poetic.

In August 2020 the project artists, joined by Sze Tsang as additional sound artist, gathered at Subiaco Arts Centre. The energy and invigoration of the community we had ignited and our delight to work together in person again was viscerally evident.

Women Distance Dancing was a revealing process that is described in this podcast titled Dancing With Everything, presented by The Blue Room Theatre’s Winter Nights Festival 2020.
