Sensorium Theatre

Company Artist 2016-2022

About

I was a proud company member of Sensorium Theatre between 2016 and 2022.

Sensorium make transformative work for young audiences with diverse, intersecting access needs and abilities. I lead company warm up in somatic practice, performed as Flo in WHOOSH! and contributed dramaturgically to new work by refining performance sensitivity and movement. Read poetry for detailed insights into my experience with this wonderful company.

My background as a special needs education assistant and my personal experience of chronic illness led me to work with Sensorium. Please explore my various company roles listed below.

2016 - Oddysea (regional WA tour only)

"An interactive multi-sensory tale set in a tactile underwater wonderland. Young audiences take a hands-on journey through an oceanic world of touch, tastes, smells, live original music and highly visual storytelling. Nestled on the beanbag sand-dunes, audiences become part of the oddyssey unfolding around them. Beginning at the shimmering gold satin sands of the beach they journey with Crab and his best friend Turtle through sparkling blue-sequined waves to a kaleidoscopic crocheted coral reef, encountering many memorable oddities along the way. With beautiful sea-themed songs and lots of one-on-one interaction, Oddysea ensures that every audience member has the best seat in the house."

  • Francis Italiano (co-artistic director, Crab)
  • Michelle Hovane (co-artistic director, Turtle)
  • Bec Bradley (Crab)
  • Amity Culver (Turtle)
  • Jamie David (music director / live musician)
  • Jessica Harlond-Kenny (Seasnake)
  • Daisy Sanders (tour manager)

The 2016 tour I was part of travelled through regional WA towns including Merredin, Esperance, Kalgoorlie and Geraldton. Oddysea has also been presented in numerous other local, national and international locations.

2017 - Sensory Rhymetime / Sensory Walk

I worked with Michelle Hovane and Amity Culver on the development of Sensory Storytelling. We toured Perth metro disability support centres trialling Going on a Bear Hunt, Twinkle Twinkle and Peas Porridge Hot among other stories and rhymes.

Since 2017 I have also led numerous Sensorium Theatre Sensory Walk sessions. This is the company's distinctly embodied PD session for the family and educators of children with diverse abilities.

2018-22 - WHOOSH!

"Calling all budding astronauts! Hop on board our spaceship and get ready for blast off! Become a pilot, engineer or navigator as we whoosh across the galaxy on an interstellar adventure for the whole family. WHOOSH! is an interactive multi-sensory adventure that puts children with disability in the Captain's Chair! This highly-tailored production is suitable for children aged 5+ with a broad range of access needs, including those with multiple and complex needs and those on the autism spectrum. With an impressive set and pioneering use of technology, including a digital app to deliver pre-show and education materials, this is Sensorium Theatre’s most ambitious production."

Having performed as Flo in WHOOSH! more than 200 times since the work's 2018 premier at Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre, this list of both artists and venues is by no means exhaustive.

2023 - Wonderbox

"Curiosity! Choice! Celebration! Wonderbox invites children to roll the dice and set out along a safe, exhilarating pathway into the unknown. Inside a giant puzzle-box of illusions, kooky-carnival friends with magic in their pockets lead audiences into an immersive multi-sensory wonderland of fantastical large-scale projections, strange tiny delights and infectious live music."

I was movement director for the final development of Wonderbox at Subiaco Arts Centre and its Perth Festival premiere.

2020 - Singapore project

I was delighted to assistant-direct and perform in the development of a new sensory show which included mentoring emerging Singaporean artists. A partnership between Performing Lines WA and The ArtGround, this project was originally titled Welcome to the Forest.

Practice sharing and cultural exchange between our Sensorium team and the Singaporean artists was richly rewarding. They later journeyed to Boorloo (Perth) to present the work as Hutan at Awesome Festival.

Warm thanks to Sensorium's co-artistic directors Francis Italiano and Michelle Hovane for the opportunity to be part of their heart-centred and life-changing company.

Also to collaborators and dear friends Bec Bradley and Jamie David for significant shared learning, joy and adventure over the years.
