Resting Song

a durational improvisation and ensemble meditation

.

Spectrum Project Space in Three Songs by Tone List
and a farewell event to 12 Joondanna Drive, 2021

About

Resting Song was a collaboration between a community of diversely skilled, deeply focused experimental music and dance improvisers. It was born from 3 years of dialogue between myself and Josten Myburgh. We created it as an opportunity to bring our collaborators together, combine approaches to improvisation and celebrate synergies in our practices of sound and movement.

The event lasted almost three hours and was an opportunity for the artists to inhabit a durational, un-time-bound process of listening and deciding as an ensemble. Inherently woven into the performance were permission and tools for rest, and for trusting the inevitable ebb and flow of creative offers.

Audience were invited to come and go at leisure with food provided. The space was set up for restful listening and engaging with the performance at any preferred pace. A meditative, present, playful and poetic communal atmosphere was created.

In December 2021 my five years living, resting, working and playing at 12 Joondanna Drive came to an end. ‘Alice’s House’ was a unique, rambling rental property that birthed many pivotal creative projects and relationships. To celebrate and say goodbye, Resting Song had a return performance - music and movement through all empty rooms of the house as the golden sun set.

Warm thanks to Josten and Kate Makowiecka for providing delicious food.
