This project is a series of spontaneous invitations for dance and sound artists to meet. We play together in open, long-form improvisation followed by conversation. It is a gradual, intuitive and generous process for building shared creative culture, community and dialogue.
The improvisation is underpinned by a practice of giving permission. We state ‘permission to…’ vocally, write permissions down or think them to ourselves both before and during the jam. The permission practice brings attention to habits, blockages, struggles and questions. It heightens a sense of noticing, acceptance and curiosity in both self and ensemble explorations.
A number of ongoing creative relationships and projects have been borne from these casual jams.
Sessions at King Street Art Centre were made possible by Performing Lines WA and the Kolyang Hub. Special thanks to Rachael Whitworth for her dedication to supporting independent artists.
An early version of this practice occurred at The Chapel Space as part of my 2019 Individual Artist Career Development Grant from The Australia Council (now Creative Australia). Warm thanks to Yilin Kong, Lenny Jacobs and Claudia Alessi.
