This project drew together a group of Australian artists who live, work and dance with disability and chronic illness. The residency activities and focus areas were decided collaboratively. All artists brought unique contributions to ignite practice and conversation about physical / mental / emotional sustainability, healing, rest and care within movement and creative practice.
The methodologies explored included yoga, meditation, tai chi, qi gong, traditional Chinese abdominal massage, kambo, massage, contact improvisation, Counter Technique, intentional rest, Body Mind Centering and various other dance and somatic methodologies.
A fascinating time that was rich in dialogue and shared perspectives, the artists shared 3 weeks that were evidently inspiring and recuperative. Highlights include dinner with Robyn Davidson, author and walk-er of Tracks, long strolls through the bush, 24 hours together in silence, cooking, music, sleepovers in the studio, swims in the Shoalhaven river and kangaroo pack watching.
Sincere thanks to dear friend Matt Shilcock who I worked closely with to conceptualise and make possible this transformative national residency.
The South Australian artists in this residency were funded by ArtsSA, now Arts and Culture.
