Melville Midwinter is a free family event presented annually as a celebration of winter solstice. Occurring outdoors during the Nyoongar season of Makuru, the event invites community together for food, arts and a moment to reflect on what has been / what is to come.
I performed a duet with Lara Dorling - marking the start of our collaboration in dance, voice and writing. Lia Tsesmelis designed a seven minute sound composition for this work, which looped seven times across an hour of performance.
.
under a peppermint tree
on a hill
in the rain
burning happens of its own accord
opening a door for the draft to whip and whirl it through
we tumble hand over head (heart)
do we know where the line meets the sea?
loud through silence
floating nowhere
stars are lost here
because we smiled and said
it’s ok
come
it’s dark
come
you’ll bring the light

I also played in an ensemble piece to close the night, curated by and featuring Josten Myburgh together with Djuna Lee, Holli Scott, Jameson Feakes, Lia Tsesmelis and Naoko Uemoto.

This poem by Cass Lynch was a prompt for the 2024 festival.
