Kaleizon

a year of choreography and community building with pre-professional dance students

.

Commissioned by the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, 2020

About

Kaleizon was a joyful, rigorous choreographic exploration resulting in a 30 minute stage performance. It was made with 18 first-year dance students at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

The learning focus areas were:

  • moving with pleasure and sensation
  • developing a cohesive ensemble
  • self awareness and positive relationships
  • exploring diverse movement styles
  • diving deep into dance solos
  • somatic awareness and intentional rest as a choreographic tool
  • performing with embodied hunger and precision
  • ’witnessing’ each other to discover authentic performance presence

Covid19 interrupted plans for a 5 week choreography project in May 2020. Instead, we worked online for Semester 1 and together in the studio for all of Semester 2. Thanks to Sue Peacock for the opportunity to guide these students in choreographic learning for an entire year and to sound artist Sze Tsang.
